The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) Gennaro Migliore, emphasized that the empowerment of women should be given the utmost importance notably given the current challenges they face in societies.

He considered them an effective partner in the development of societies and that the issue of empowerment has become an integral part of all national development programmes and plans for all countries around the world.

He gave a lecture in the applied diploma on Modern Skills in Parliamentary Work for Women MPs. The diploma was launched by the Arab Parliamentary Diplomacy Center affiliated to the Arab Parliament (AP), under the title "Experience of Mediterranean Parliaments for Women's Empowerment and Mechanisms to Address Violence Against Women in Political Action."

PAM President stressed the need to address violence against women in need of laws protecting their rights against arbitrary practices based on their vulnerability. He relied on the role of women parliamentarians in this regard through awareness-raising and legislation guaranteeing the rights of women through their role in their own parliaments.

He commended the serious and ambitious initiatives launched by the AP under the presidency of Adel Bin AdulRahman Alasoomi, which support Women in Arab Societies in favour of promoting a comprehensive community renaissance.

The lecture witnessed the exchange of discussions and interventions with Women MPs representing 15 National Arab Parliaments. They contributed to consolidating the positive image of Arab women and the role of female MPs.

PAM President praised the distinguished representation of Arab women parliamentarians in regional and international parliamentary forums. He called for the application diploma to come with recommendations supported by parliamentary diplomacy.

He confirmed that if gender equality is achieved, societies will become safer and violence against women will be reduced.

Furthermore, he valued the great humanitarian role played by women in such exceptional times. Migliore described this stage as "moments unparalleled in modern history" where women played a key role by leading the front lines to this humanitarian crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lastly, PAM President expressed his aspiration to strengthen the mechanisms and tools for cooperation and joint coordination with the AP, and to meetings in person in the near future to complete constructive discussions and interventions.
