New Valley's Kharga in the Western Desert has been awarded the title of Egypt's first environment-friendly city by Minister of Environment Yasmin Fouad.

Fouad made this announcement during her visit to the governorate on World Environment Day marking June 5.

As the government and people of Kharga have become very aware and value their green spaces more than anything, the ministry provided the governorate with 5,000 olive trees, and will deliver another 5,000 in the upcoming weeks.

In order to convince their citizens to be environment-friendly, the ministry planted 7,000 trees on Al Kharga Airport road extending on 11 kilometers.

The ministry has cultivated numerous palm trees on 90 faddans and will encompass 18,000 seedlings by the end of 2022. Seven thousand palm trees have already been planted. The farm will have 18 fridges to preserve dates, as the capacity of each is 2,500 tons.

According to a statement released by the Minister of Environment, Kharga was selected to be environment-friendly because it has no factories, except for those of date packaging, and because it depends on solar power and natural gas for energy.

The statement also noted that the share per capita in green areas is 500 square meters.

It's worth mentioning that the ministry, in coordination with the New Valley municipal authority,  introduced a plantation spanning over five faddens to produce 30,000 seedlings that will be installed across the governorate.
