 New Method of Radiation Treats Cancer in Eye Blink

A team of scientists in the USA has devised a very fast new way to treat various types of cancer, even the deep tumors, by radiation.

The team members used protons to shell the tumors and applied it to laboratory animals.

According to the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, and Physics, it is clear from these tests that one session with a high dose of radiation has the same effect as radiation therapy in the traditional way currently used.

Radiotherapy lies in the fact that doctors kill cancer cells by means of radiation while seeking to avoid damage to healthy tissues as much as possible.

In recent years, experts have begun testing the rapid treatment method, whereby the patient gets a large dose of radiation in one session instead of prolonging the treatment to several weeks.

Some experts stress that this method is less dangerous for patients when it is compared with the other methods of treatment.

On the other hand, tests showed that the use of electrons in treatment does not work effectively because they do not reach the depths of the body.

The traditional methods cannot destroy the cancer cells in the internal organs of the body.

Another group of scientists has examined electromagnetic radiation, but it became clear that the devices currently in use do not allow the patient to obtain the required dose for rapid treatment.

There are some results for the use of protons in rapid therapy, but they still need a detailed study, says researcher James Metz of the University of Pennsylvania, "This is the first time we publish the results of our tests that indicate the possibility of using protons in rapid treatment instead of traditional electrons."

The researchers obtained a radiation dose of 78 ± 9 Gray per second, which is sufficient for the patient to obtain the required dose for treatment within one second. It is worthy to note that in the traditional method, the patient gets less than one gray per second.

The results of the experiments showed that both methods (conventional and rapid) eliminate the tumor well.
