On Sunday, Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka pledged to donate her earnings from next week's Western and Southern Open to support earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

The four-time grand slam champion announced her pledge in response to the magnitude-7.2 quake that struck the Caribbean nation where her father hails from.

"Really hurts to see all the devastation that's going on in Haiti, and I feel like we really can't catch a break," Osaka said on Twitter.

"I'm about to play a tournament this week and I'll give all the prize money to relief efforts for Haiti. I know our ancestors [sic] blood is strong we'll keep rising."

A massive 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Saturday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said, raising fears of destruction similar to the devastating 2010 quake that shattered the country.

At least 304 people have died and more than 1,800 were injured, according to Haiti’s civil protection service. The USGS predicts the death toll could reach thousands.

Ariel Henry, Haiti’s new prime minister, in a translated tweet extended his sympathies to the parents of the victims of this violent earthquake which caused several losses of human and material lives in several geographical departments of the country.
