Myanmar security forces shot and launched night raids in the main city of Yangon after the latest protests against the coup last month dispersed with tear gas and stun grenades.

The Southeast Asian country has been plunged into turmoil since the military ousted the elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and detained her on February 1, with daily protests and strikes that affected the business sector and paralyzed the government.

Protesters took part in scattered protests across Myanmar on Saturday and local media reported that police fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse protesters in the Sancheung district of Yangon, the country's largest city. There were no reports of injuries.

Residents said soldiers and police penetrated several areas in Yangon and fired shots late at night.

Residents there said they had arrested at least three people in Kyauktada town. They did not know the reason for the arrests.

The Association for the Assistance of Political Prisoners said that more than 1,500 people were arrested under the military council. This association and the United Nations say more than 50 protesters have died.
