Morocco condemned the Israeli raid on the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem on Saturday, saying the escalation undermines peace efforts.

After Israeli police raided Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque compound on Friday, at least 152 Palestinians were injured and over 400 were arrested.

"This flagrant attack and systematic provocation during the holy month of Ramadan....will stir hatred and extremism and undermine opportunities for the region's peace process," Morocco's foreign ministry said in a statement.

Morocco, whose monarch chairs the Organization of Islamic Cooperation's (OIC) Al Quds Committee, will re-establish diplomatic relations with Israel in December 2020.

Other Arab powers, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and others, issued statements condemning Israel's actions, while the US State Department urged all "parties to exercise caution (and) avoid provocative acts and language."

The third holiest place in Islam, Al Aqsa Mosque, has been under Israeli control since 1967.
