After the pandemic led to the closure of Egyptian schools in January 2021, there has been no official national source to understand when schools will reopen and just how unequal the access to learning has been over the past weeks.

"The next academic term will begin from February 20," the Minister of Education representative told elmostakbal news on Sunday.

The Ministry of Education representative denied any intention to change or amend the date of the beginning of the next academic term.

In the same context, Egyptian Minister of Education Tareq Shawqi asserted earlier this month that there is no intention to call off mid-year exams or hold them in May under any circumstances.

Shawqi denied all rumours in this regard, affirming that the ministry will reveal all details about mid-year exams and the second term on 14 February.

The minister added that there is "full coordination" with the Ministry of Health to clean and disinfect schools to help slow the spread of the virus.

He also added that the ministry will monitor trends to ensure elementary and secondary schools remain safe after they reopen.

Shawqi had previously said all students learning online could return to physical classrooms by Feb. 20, but the detection of virus variants and concern cases could spike had cast doubt on that date.
