More than ten million people in the United States of America are threatened by eviction as of today, Saturday, because they couldn't pay rent on time.

According to the Center of Priorities of Budget and Politics in the US, more than ten million people defaulted their dues.

Some 3.6 million tenants may be evicted within two months according to a survey carried out by the staff of Statics' Bureau earlier in July which included 51 million tenants.

It is worth noting, that US President Joe Biden asked Congress on Thursday to extend the grace period.

Observers criticize Biden that he waits until the last moment to move.

That grace period followed passed by ex-US President Donald Trump in March 2020 to prevent evicting millions of tenants across the USA due to the pandemic. But not all tenants benefited from Trump's grace period.

Over the last few months, the US government decided to suspend rent due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus (known also as COVID-19) so eviction was stopped temporarily as the tenants were granted grace a period.

Yesterday, US lawmakers failed to give the tenants much time as they face financial hardships on the backdrop of spreading the "Delta" strain which is causing a new spike in infections in the USA.

A Congressional commission has suggested extending the grace period until December 31.

But this suggestion did not have sufficient support from the Democrats in the House of Representatives so some members said that the grace period may be extended until October 18.

Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House said over a statement released yesterday,  said that none of the Republicans in the House or Senate voted in favor of extending the grace period.

A source in Congress told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that the Demos themselves are still pided towards that suggestion.
