On Tuesday, Mexico appointed Javier Aguirre, who coached the first Egyptian national football team a few years ago, as their new coach for 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign which some of its events will take place on their lands.
The 65-year-old was appointed alongside national icon Rafael Marquez as the assistant coach.
said that the profiles of the two coaches complement each other "perfectly".
The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) official, and the director of the national teams Duilio Davino said that the search for a replacement for Jaime Lozano was exhaustive one and was done with both the 2026 and 2030 World Cups in mind.
Regarding their appointments: “Both profiles undoubtedly complement each other. On the one hand Javier has wide experience in competitions at the highest level and is accustomed to dealing with high levels of pressure. He also has experience working throughout Europe, Africa and Asia.
“On the other hand, Rafa is at the beginning of his career as a coach in which he has focussed on development football and working with young people.
“He can contribute with his knowledge in these two years [until World Cup 26] and then assume the leadership from 2026 to 2030.”
