British Prime Minister Boris Johnson discussed Covid travel restrictions with German chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday, marking her final official visit to the UK as chancellor.

Merkel affirmed, during the meeting, that Britons who have had two COVID-19 vaccinations should soon be able to travel to Germany without going into quarantine on arrival.

"I assume that in the foreseeable future those who have been vaccinated twice will be able to travel again without going into quarantine," Merkel told a joint news conference with Johnson.

Merkel arrived at Chequers, Johnson's Buckinghamshire residence, earlier for the talks. Her visit to UK is the last official one, as the German leader will step down after the general election in September.

Last week, she expressed her wishes that she wanted other countries to follow Germany's lead by introducing tougher restrictions for UK travellers due to concerns about the Delta variant.

Since May, travellers from the UK have been banned from entering Germany, aside from a few limited exceptions. Those who are allowed to arrive from the UK must quarantine for 14 days.

On his part, Johnson is expected to announce the latest steps towards ending lockdown in England in the next few days, with international travel high on the agenda.

The two leaders will dine on an three-course meal featuring British produce including an English asparagus tart and Oxfordshire beef fillet during a working lunch.

In the same vein, the chancellor is going to meet the Queen at Windsor Castle and address a meeting of the UK cabinet. She is set to become the first foreign leader to address the UK Cabinet since US President Bill Clinton in 1997.
