Mansoura Univ. Ranked 4th Globally in Liver Transplant

Mansoura University`s liver transplant center ranked fourth globally and first in the Middle East in the number of cases and their rate of recovery.

The team exerted great efforts over long hours in performing liver transplant surgeries. They followed up cases to reach 730 surgeries during 14 years of a living donor with a cure rate of 91%.

Therefore, the center ranked fourth globally in liver transplant surgeries and first in the Middle East in the number of cases they helped and the rate of recovery.

Dr. Ashraf Abdel Basset, President of Mansoura University, honored the liver transplant team at the Gastrointestinal Surgery Center of the university for their great achievements. They succeeded to perform 730 surgeries since 2004 when the center's liver transplant program was first launched.

Abdel Basset expressed his happiness for being among the members of such a distinguished team locally and globally.

He paid tribute to the founders of the center and the liver transplant project on laying the basic building block for the project that gives hope for liver patients to live.

The event was attended by Dr. Nisreen Salah Omar, Acting Dean of the College of Medicine, Dr. Mohamed Hegazy, Executive Director of Hospitals and Medical Centers, Dr. Mohamed Al-Shobry, Director of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Center, and Dr. Mohamed Abdel Wahab, the supervisor of the liver transplant team.

On his part, Al-Shobry said: “The center is a destination for patients with liver and digestive systems from various governorates around Egypt.”

“The center achieved a great medical reputation thanks to the efforts of doctors, workers, and nurses, he added." “They succeeded to establish an integrated system to serve the Egyptian patient. The center is working to provide all medical services at a level comparable to international centers.”

Abdel Wahab said: “90 liver transplant surgeries were performed in 2019, 91 cases of them were cured. 50% of them were from Dakahlia Governorate, 40% from various governorates and 10% from Arab countries.”

“Therefore, they ranked 4th globally and first in the Middle East in the number of cases and their rate of recovery,” Abdel Wahab stated.

The team included specialties of surgery, internal medicine, radiology, anesthesia and intensive care, pathology, and nursing.
