British police detained a man on Thursday after a suspicious package was sent to Wockhardt, one of AstraZeneca’s supply partners involved in manufacturing its COVID-19 vaccine.

“A 53-year-old man from Chatham has been arrested on suspicion of sending the package and remains in custody as enquiries continue,” Kent Police said.

“There is no evidence to suggest there is an ongoing threat,” the police added.

However, as part of ongoing inquiries, they carried out warrants at addresses in Luton Road and Chatham Hill in the Medway town on Thursday morning.

The package was found on Wednesday at the factory in North Wales, and all staff had to be evacuated from the Wockhardt site in Wrexham.

The global pharmaceutical and biotechnology company provides fill-and-finish services for the Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, the final stage of putting the vaccine into vials.

Production halted for hours while police and the Army investigated the suspicious package, though it is understood the production schedule was not affected.
