Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly arrived in Libya's capital on Tuesday, according to his office, to negotiate trade and other issues with the newly appointed government.

Madbouly is the highest-ranking Egyptian official to visit Libya since the country's oil-rich economy collapsed in 2011. That year, a NATO-backed rebellion ousted long-time dictator Moammar Gadhafi, who was later assassinated.

The prime minister arrived at Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli with 11 members of his Cabinet and trade and industry officials.

According to the release, he was scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah to discuss a "range of files and issues of mutual interest."

The visit comes after Libya's transitional government took power last month, with the aim of holding elections in December after a decade of fighting and upheaval.
