On Thursday, the National Center for Disease Control in Libya (NCDC) reported 23 cases of the UK COVID-19 variant, after the center tested 88 positive samples for the Coronavirus.

The NCDC said in a statement that if have found 26% of the total samples were infected by the variant virus. It is the first time that Libya records the new version of the Covid-19. The UK Covid-19 Variant is characterized by rapid transmission and spread of infection in society.

"Recording this type is cause for concern due to the expectation of a widespread epidemic wave with severe consequences," the statement warns. "Libya is witnessing a lack of commitment to implementing preventive and precautionary measures," it added.

The NCDC called for the necessary support to confront the mutated virus, and "developing strategies for strains of the virus."

Libya reported more than 130 thousand confirmed cases of Covid-19. The war-torn country suffers from the spread of the pandemic and lack of medical resources.
