The terrorist group ISIS claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing in the Afghan capital.
Earlier this month, a huge blast rocked one of the biggest mosques in Afghanistan’s western city of Herat, killing 18 people, including a prominent cleric, and dozens wounded.
Tolonews reported that the blast took place at Gazargah Mosque just before Friday prayers, killing imam Mujib ur Rahman Ansari. Officials noted that the death toll is expected to rise.
Footage on social media showed what appeared to be blood-stained bodies scattered around the compound of the mosque. Ansari was an influential pro-Taliban cleric known for his fiery speeches.
His death was confirmed by the chief spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid.
The Spokesman for Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry pointed out there were more dead and wounded, but could not provide details. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast.
