The first photo of Hollywood star Johnny Depp as King Louis XV in the upcoming French historical romance “Jeanne du Barry” has been unveiled.
The American actor is seen in the photo in the costume for his role and wearing a blindfold.
“Jeanne du Barry” is helmed by French director Maiwenn from a screenplay she co-wrote with Teddy Lussi-Modeste.
The movie also features Maiwenn as Jeanne du Berry, a countess and Louis XV’s mistress who was beheaded during the French Revolution.
The cast will also include Benjamin Lavernhe, Pierre Richard, Melvil Poupaud, Noémie Lvovsky, Pascal Greggory, and India Hair.
“Jeanne du Barry” is produced by the Paris-based Why Not Productions, IN2, and France Télévisions. Wild Bunch International (“Titane”) is handling world sales while Le Pacte is distributing the movie in France.
Netflix has licensed to stream the movie in France after its theatrical release.
Louis XV, known as Louis the Beloved, recorded the second-longest reign in French history, ruling the country from 1715 to 1774.
He was unpopular at the time of his death on May 10, 1774, after being accused of debauchery and corruption.
“Jeanne du Barry” began principal photography at the end of July in Paris and the Île-de-France region, using landmarks like the Palace of Versailles as backdrops.
The movie marks Depp’s first movie role since his highly publicized defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard.
In June, the jury found that Heard had defamed Depp in her 2018 Washington Post op-ed she wrote about her experience with domestic abuse and described herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse”.
The jury also found that Depp defamed Heard, through his attorney, while fighting back against her charges.
Depp made his last cinematic appearance in the 2020 movie “Minamata“.
