Japanese Prime Minister (PM) Yoshihide Suga received the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine  on Tuesday, in preparation for his forthcoming meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden next month.

Suga is the first Japanese government official to receive the vaccine publicly. 80 to 90 officials will be vaccinated before heading to the United States early next month.

The Japanese PM is the first foreign leader to meet Biden at the White House in Washington.

The two leaders are expected to agree to strengthen the bilateral alliance and their commitment to freedom of passage in the Indian and Pacific oceans, according to Japan’s Yomiuri newspaper.
