UNESCO is celebrating International Day of Education on Jan. 24, with the theme "to invest in people, prioritize education".

The day aims to raise awareness about the role of education for peace and development.

It also supports transformative actions for inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all.

“International Day of Education 2023 will be a global platform to sustain political mobilization, take forward national commitments and global initiatives, and step up public engagement in favor of education as the path to peace, sustainable development and individual and collective well-being,” UN said in a statement.

Building on the global momentum generated by the UN Transforming Education Summit in September 2022, this year’s Day will call for maintaining strong political mobilization around education and chart the way to translate commitments and global initiatives into action, according to a statement by UNESCO.

Education must be prioritized to accelerate progress towards all the Sustainable Development Goals against the backdrop of a global recession, growing inequalities and the climate crisis, UNESCO noted.

UNESCO is dedicating this year's International Day to girls and women in Afghanistan who have been deprived of their right to education. It is calling for the immediate lifting of the ban restricting their access to education, the statement added.

In 2018, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming 24 January as the International Day of Education to mark the importance of education in global peace and development.
