Outgoing Israeli Public Security Minister Omer Bar-Lev warned Thursday that his expected successor could spark a large-scale Palestinian uprising if he tries to change the status quo of Al Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem.

Bar-Lev was referring to far-right MK Itamar Ben Gvir, who is set to take office in the coming weeks.

Bar-Lev said that he had advised the person charged with forming the next government, Benjamin Netanyahu, to place a person other than Ben Jvir in this sensitive position in which he controls the Israel Police, which is currently under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Public Security.

Yedioth Ahronoth, an Israeli daily newspaper, quoted Bar-Lev as saying, "If there is a change in the status quo of Al Aqsa, a third intifada will kick off," recalling that the first and second intifadas witnessed deadly attacks against Israelis and clashes with Israeli forces on an almost daily basis.
