Iraq's Higher Committee for Health and National Safety decided on Wednesday to extend a countrywide lockdown it imposed in response to the coronavirus pandemic until the start of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

Today, the Iraqi Ministry of Health reported 15 new coronavirus cases in the Arab country, increasing the total number to more than 1,400.

As many as 46 people have recovered from the virus, the ministry noted, rising the toll of the recovered to 766. The death toll there reached 78.

Globally, more than two million people had been infected with COVID-19 and the overall death increased to more than 128,800.

Several Arab countries have tightened restrictions on movement and travel, with the aim of curbing the spread of the coronavirus, and some have pledged billions of dollars in economic stimulus programs to reduce the economic repercussions of the crisis.

The World Health Organization (WHO) earlier declared COVID-19 a global pandemic.
