An Indonesian court urged the President of the country and six other senior officials, on the backdrop of neglecting the rights of citizens, to have good, non -polluted air.

The court ordered the sentenced officials to work on improving the quality of air as the population of Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, suffers from bad air there that doesn’t go with international standards.

The bench of the Central Court of Jakarta voted unanimously in favor of the decision.

It is worth noting that thirty-two Indonesian nationals filed a lawsuit with the court in July 2019.

The plaintiffs claimed the presidents and ministers of Interior, Health, and Environment along with Governors of Jakarta and Western Java did not do their best in order to provide healthy living conditions for the population of the capital.

Seif El-Din Zury, Chief Judge said that senior officials must take serious measurements to ensure the rights of citizens to good air by applying more stricter regulations to s protect the health of man, the environment, and the environmental systems according to principles of science and technology.

The plaintiffs comprise activists, public figures, drivers of fire cycles and taxis, and people suffering from diseases linked to pollution.

The plaintiffs did not ask for compensation but instead ask harsher penalties for those who cause pollution.

It is worth noting that Jakarta houses more than 10 million people and threefold of this number abides in greater Jakarta which includes suburbs and uptowns.

These suburbs are exposed to floods and precipitous extracting of groundwater.

Jakarta suffers badly from the tremendous pollution of local rivers and ground waters that feed the city.

Suffocating crowdedness in Jakarta costs the Indonesian economy more than $ 6.5 billion annually.

Indonesia was among the most countries hit by the Coronavirus ( known also as COVID-19) as the medical system came under ongoing pressure.
