India's government said Thursday that it has managed to curb an increase in cases of Covid-19.

Official sources revealed that a fifth of the country's regions have not reported any new cases for a week, even though the vaccination campaign has so far only included 2.4 million people throughout the country.

India, home to about 1.35 billion people, has the second-highest number of cases of the infection Coronavirus in the world after the United States of America (USA).

But the infection rate has decreased significantly since its peak in mid-September.

Some studies have indicated the possibility of herd immunity in some areas of the country.

"India has succeeded in containing the pandemic," Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said, noting that the number of cases registered in the past 24 hours was less than 12,000.

He added that 146 out of 718 regions in the country had not reported any cases of corona a week ago, and 18 regions two weeks ago.

India has recorded so far in total ten million 700 thousand injuries and about 153,847 deaths, which is one of the lowest death rates from the disease in the world, which is partly due to the predominance of young people over its population.

While 2020 will be remembered as the year a global threat touched nearly every person on the planet, we hope 2021 will be remembered as the year the whole world benefited from an equitable and effective Covid-19 response, as the Hindustan Times reported.

"Two decades ago, we created a foundation focused on global health because we wanted to use the resources from Microsoft to improve as many lives as possible. Health is the bedrock of any thriving society. That fact has never been clearer than it has been over the last year, as the pandemic has upended lives here in India and around the world," the minister said.
