UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science in the Arab State participated in the celebration of the Arab Cultural Heritage Day, declared on the 27th of February, which was held under the title “jewelry in Arabic cultural heritage”. The celebration was organized by the pision of culture and dialogue between civilizations in the social affairs sector of the League Of Arab States. Several representatives and cultural heritage experts from Arab countries participated in the celebration along with representatives from concerned civil society organizations. The celebration included technical presentations on topics related to jewelry and it place and importance in Arab cultural heritage. Dr. Bisher Imam, representing Dr. Abdulaziz Almuzaini, Director of UNESCO regional bureau for science in the Arab states highlighted that UNESCO remains steadfast, jointly with regional partners such as ALECSO, in supporting the capacities of all member states in their efforts to implement the various international agreements/protocols of UNESCO which calls for the safeguarding of cultural heritage (1972), combating illicit traffic of cultural properties (1970) and the protection of intangible cultural heritage. He stressed the importance of regional cooperation to safeguard Arab cultural heritage sites, which are subjected to many threats including armed conflicts, natural disasters, and the impacts of climate change. Dr. Imam also pointed out that Jewelry, as cultural elements, crosses both the tangible and intangible where traditions, skills, craftsmanship, creativity, and innovation interact to reflect societal and economic aspects.

The Arab region hosts 88 sites that are listed on UNESCO list of sites with significant cultural value, along with 53 cultural elements on the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list. In its most recent session (12-18 December 2021), the international committee for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage approved the inscription of six new cultural and artistic expression forms from the Arab Region on the list. These include Falconry, Arabic Calligraphy, Fijri performance, Palestinian Embroidery, Alleppo Kodood, and Tborideh performance. It is noteworthy that most of these cultural and artistic expression forms were jointly nominated, which reflects both the persity and connectedness of Arabic cultural heritage.
