Today, Wednesday marks the fourth death anniversary of Egyptian award-winning actor, Omar El-Sharif.

Renowned Egyptologist Zahi Hawass observed his death saying, "In the beginning, I thought that he was arrogant because of his stardom, but after I got close to him, I discovered that he was a very simple and humble man".

"I remember asking him once to talk about the Egyptian antiquities in Italy to which he responded to my request very quickly and stood in front of the Italian television speaking with pride about the greatness of our antiquities without material reward, as he was obsessed with Egypt and its history," he added.

"I once again requested to take part in an advertising campaign promoting the preservation of Egyptian antiquities. He accepted and participated in it without being paid a single pound, although he was worth millions, but he refused and said that it is a simple thing for his country Egypt."

The Egyptologist also talked about the award-winning actor last days, revealing that he had lived difficult days before his departure, stating that he underwent surgery on his left leg and when he arrived back to Egypt he said that he came to die on his land and to be buried in its soil.

"The traveler who got tired of traveling, and wanted to rest from the search for fame and success."

This was how Hawass described the last period of the global star life.

"El-Sharif suffered from Alzheimer and lost the ability to remember events and people, and forgot everything but knew me well and did not forget my name due to my permanent closeness to him."

He noted that days before his departure the actor stopped talking, as if his time drew near, and on the morning of July 10, 2015, he had a heart attack and passed away.

Hawass concluded that he loved El-Sharif and respected him and appreciate his great artistic career. He departed leaving behind a good reputation and a wonderful journey.
