Last Thursday, at his residence in the Kazakh capital, Nur-Sultan, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Professor Ahmad At-Tayyeb received the Russian Orthodox Church delegation participating in the 7th Conference of Religious Leaders in Kazakhstan.
The delegation was headed by Metropolitan Anthony, Chairman of the Department of External Church Relations at the Russian Orthodox Church.
Metropolitan Anthony conveyed the greetings of Patriarch Kirill, Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, and his best wishes for the Grand Imam’s good health, reminding the Imam of their last meeting in 2010.
Anthony added that Patriarch Kirill is interested in interfaith dialogue, and therefore he established a special council for interreligious dialogue in the Russian Orthodox Church, where all the religious leaders of Russia gather to discuss various related issues.
For his part, the Grand Imam sent his greetings to Patriarch Kirill and looked forward to developing joint work and strengthening cooperation between Al-Azhar and the Russian Orthodox Church. This, according to the Grand Imam, is aimed to replace hatred, fanaticism and wars with peace and brotherhood.
He also indicated Al-Azhar’s openness to various religious institutions in the East and West, towards promoting the values of coexistence, brotherhood and world peace. He then asserted that currently more solidarity and collaboration are needed to face contemporary challenges.
