The number of confirmed Coronavirus cases in Germany has reached 22,672, and 82 deaths as of Monday, according to public health agency Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

That compares with 18,610 cases and 55 deaths on Sunday.

Moreover, the RKI warned that the actual number was likely higher as not all local health authorities had submitted their figures over the weekend.

Germany measures to battle Coronavirus

Germany has tightened curbs on social interactions to try to contain the coronavirus outbreak, banning public gatherings of more than two people.

In a televised statement, Chancellor Angela Merkel said "our own behavior" is the "most effective way" of slowing the rate of infection.

The measures included the closure of hair, beauty and massage facilities. Other non-essential shops had already been shut down.

Angela Merkel quarantined over Coronavirus concerns

Shortly afterward, Mrs Merkel's office said she would quarantine herself.

A doctor who vaccinated her on Friday against pneumococcus, a pneumonia-causing bacteria, had tested positive for coronavirus.

"The chancellor, 65, will be tested regularly in the next few days and work from home via SMS and e-mails," her spokesman said.

Germany, Europe's largest economy, has so far confirmed 18,610 cases and 55 deaths from Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus.

WHO announces Coronavirus a global pandemic

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared coronavirus a global pandemic as the new virus has rapidly spread to more than 121,000 people from Asia to the Middle East, Europe, and the United States.

According to the organization, the number of COVID-19 infections outside China has doubled in the past two weeks, and the number of countries hit by the epidemic has tripled.

“We are very concerned to achieve the alarming levels of the outbreak and its severity, as well as the alarming levels of inaction,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a press conference in Geneva.

More cases of the virus, which causes respiratory disease Covid-19, continue to emerge, with outbreaks in SouthKorea, Italy, and Iran.

Worldwide, the new virus has infected more than 303,000 people and killed more than 12,940.
