German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the European Union (EU) will always support Greece in any potential confrontation with Turkey, according to Greek city journal.

Referring to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Merkel stated he can expect an incident if Turkey's research vessel Oruc Reis is sent out for in disputed waters.

"Turkey will have many problems, not only with Greece but with the whole of Europe if it continues the challenges and the consequences will be very severe," Merkel was quoted as saying.

Earlier, the Turkish Embassy in the United States deleted a tweet that said Oruc Reis had started seismic research in the Mediterranean.

Greece responded strongly to the move and prepared its military to react in the area that both countries consider to be a part of their continental shelf.
