Son of Libya's former leader Muammar al-Gaddafi registered as a presidential candidate for the December 24 election, an official from the electoral commission revealed on Sunday.

“Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi submitted … his candidacy for the presidential election to the High National Electoral Commission office in the [southern] city of Sebha,” a statement by the commission said on Sunday.

Saif is one of the most prominent figures expected to run for the president in a list that includes renegade eastern commander Khalifa Haftar, Prime Minister Hamid Dbeibah as well as parliament speaker Aguila Saleh.

Photographs and videos on social media showed Saif, with a gray beard and wearing glasses and a traditional brown robe and turban, signing documents at the registration center in the southern town of Sebha.

Libya opened registration for candidates on Monday.

World leaders gathered on Friday for Libya Conference in Paris where they agreed to push sanctions against anyone who disrupts Libya’s electoral process and political transition.

In July, Seif al-Islam, 49, informed The New York Times he was planning a political comeback.

In a rare interview, Gaddafi's son said he wanted to “restore the lost unity” of Libya after a decade of chaos, affirming that he did not exclude standing for the presidency.
