French Health Minister Olivier Véran tested positive for Covid-19 and put himself in self-quarantine, media outlets reported on Thursday.

A spokesperson of France's Health Ministry told AFP that the minister showed "light symptoms," noting that he had been vaccinated three times.

"He will go into isolation and continue to work from his private quarters in the ministry," the spokesperson said.

On his part, Véran tweeted: "I've tested positive for Covid. As a result, I have self-isolated and continue working from a distance."

The minister contracted the virus at the time health statistics show the highest ever amount in new daily cases of the Covid-19 pandemic.

France recorded the highest ever number of newly reported Covid cases during the last weeks.

On the other hand, the country eased Covid travel restrictions for people arriving from the UK after the French government imposed a ban on British tourists in December last year to control the spread of the Omicron variant.

Tourism Minister Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne has announced that people travelling from the UK to France will no longer have to self-isolate on arrival or show proof that their trip is essential.

However, the requirement for a negative COVID test, conducted 24 hours before their visit, remains in place.
