PARIS, Sept 12 (SEE)- The French government passed a law banning the use of mobile phones in all primary and middle schools as of the new academic year.

Students are required to close their phones or put them in a cupboard until the end of the school day, except for emergencies and children with special needs.

Secondary school students can also implement this procedure, but voluntarily.

Minister of National Education Jean-Michel Blanquer said the decision aims at helping children focus on their lessons, improve their social skills and limit the use of social networking sites.

The ban also aims to address thefts and violence in schools.

The law allows teachers to confiscate student phones by the end of the day in cases of non-compliance.
