Australia’s new federal cabinet was sworn in on Wednesday, as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese appointed a record number of women to a perse ministerial team that includes religious minorities and indigenous peoples.

Albanese’s cabinet had 23 ministers, including 10 women, compared to 7 women ministers in former Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s Liberal government.

At a ceremony in the capital, Canberra Industry Minister Ed Husick and Youth Minister Anne Ali became the first Muslim ministers in the Australian federal government.

Wearing a kangaroo leather cloak, Linda Burnie also became the first Aboriginal woman to hold the country’s Aboriginal Ministry.

It is noteworthy that the original inhabitants of Australia are named Aboriginals who settles in the country before the European landed there.

Albanese formed a temporary ministry that included 4 other key members two days after the May 21 elections, to be able to participate in the meeting of the Quartet in Tokyo, in the presence of US President Joe Biden and the leaders of Japan and India.

The cabinet line-up included Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, who assumed the defense portfolio and was a member of the interim government, as well as Benny Wong, who took the foreign portfolio.

Albanese said on Tuesday that Labor would rule alone after winning 77 seats in the 151-seat House of Representatives, allowing it to form a majority government without the support of independents and Greens focused on climate issues.
