FC Bayern Munich, the defending champions, issued a strong warning to their rivals in the Bundesliga's opening at the Allianz Arena, after they thrashed Schalke 04, 8/0 breaking the record for the highest-ever victory in the opening game of a league season.

Serge Gnabry starred for Bayern after he scored a hat-trick in the fourth, 47 and 59 minutes, Leon Goretzka in the 19th minute, Robert Lewandowski in the 31st minute from a penalty kick, Thomas Müller in the 69th minute, Leroy Sane in the 71st minute and Jamal Musiala in the 81st minute.

Leroy Sane, making his debut after a £44.7m move from Manchester City, assisted two of Gnabry's goals and scored a goal.

"I'm very happy. It was a very good day, a good game, many goals. We didn't ease off at all. Of course I want to go full throttle, but I'm not quite at 100 percent yet. I always want to give my best, help the team play well and win", he told fcbayern.com.

Coach Hansi Flick said after the huge win: "We have done excellently. Before the game we said we wanted to lay down a marker, and we did so. We wanted to show that we are also ready for this season. I'm glad that we've brought such a performance onto the pitch today".

Meanwhile, Schalke coach David Wagner, whose team has failed to win any of their last 17 league matches, said: “It was a poor performance, we didn’t play well. Bayern were in outstandingly good form. At the moment they’re probably the world’s best team, they showed that today”.

That was the second time Bayern managed eight goals in a game this year, having smashed Barcelona 8-2 in the Champions League quarter-finals.
