On Saturday, about 40 security and civilian volunteers were killed in northern and eastern Burkina Faso in three separate attacks carried out by suspected extremist gunmen, according to local sources, on Monday.
The deadliest attack targeted the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) in the Sahel region, killing about 20 people, including 8 volunteers, "according to one of their officials.
A security source stated that 5 other volunteers and a civilian were killed on the same day in the same area.
About 15 civilians were killed in an attack on a convoy protected by volunteers in southeastern Burkina Faso.
