The European parliament would vote on German defense minister Ursula von der Leyen’s candidacy for EU Commission chief next Tuesday, July 16, the parliament spokesman revealed, according to Reuters.

Concerns over Leyen’s chances of gaining the approval of the EU assembly had fed rumours that the vote could have been postponed.

She needs the backing of an absolute majority of 376 votes  to be confirmed.

Noteworthy, the German minister, a 60-year-old former gynecologist, and mother of seven, promised to be tougher on the rule of law than the outgoing commission and to reform the failed asylum system.
