The 27 member- states of the European Union (EU) agreed, at dawn today (Wednesday), to ban the sale of new cars powered by heat engines, including petrol and diesel, starting from 2035, as part of efforts to achieve carbon neutrality in Europe by 2050, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The European Commission unveiled this project in July 2021 in order to achieve Europe's climate goals and reduce carbon dioxide emissions from new cars on the continent to zero.

The decision, which was approved by European environment ministers during their meeting in Luxembourg days ago, imposes virtually a ban in all EU countries on the sale of new cars equipped with gasoline or diesel engines, and the subsequent transition to electric motors.
