Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that holding a meeting with his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, is "possible," after the severance of diplomatic relations with Damascus since 2011.

In response to a question from a reporter in parliament, if he could meet the Syrian president, Erdogan said: "It is possible. There is no room for resentment in politics."

"In the end, steps are taken under the best of circumstances," he added.

Erdogan said last August that he "cannot completely rule out dialogue and diplomacy with Syria," adding that "diplomacy between countries cannot be completely cut off."

Although there was no contact between Erdogan and Assad, the heads of the intelligence services of the two countries maintained contact between them.

It is noteworthy that the declared shift in Ankara's positions towards Damascus came on August 11, by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Davutoglu said at the time: "We have to somehow reconcile the opposition and the regime in Syria, otherwise there will be no lasting peace. There must be a strong administration to prevent the division of Syria."
