French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Élisabeth Borne, the low-key minister of labor and a former minister of the environment, as his new prime minister on Monday.

“The president of the Republic has appointed Élisabeth Borne prime minister and has tasked her with forming a government,” the French presidency said in a statement.

Macron and the new Prime Minister are expected to name the full government in the coming days. In 2017, she was appointed as a transport minister and served as ecology minister from 2019 to 2020.

Borne, 61, succeeds Jean Castex, whose resignation was expected after Macron’s reelection last month. In France, it's common for presidents to have more than one Prime Minister during their terms.

On his part, the French President thanked Castex and his team. “He took action with passion and dedication to serve France,” he tweeted.
