Officials at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, detained a number of Egyptian citizens, as a result of the difference in visas and the lack of clarity of the purpose of the visit, and some of them violating the precautionary measures to confront the emerging coronavirus.

The Egyptian Embassy in Addis Ababa announced that a diplomatic and administrative staff, including the Egyptian consul and the first secretary of the embassy, had moved to Bole International Airport, to communicate with the Egyptian citizens at the airport.

The embassy said in a statement on Facebook, today: “The Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Addis Ababa would like to clarify that as soon as the embassy got a notification of the incident, a diplomatic and administrative staff, including the Egyptian consul and the embassy’s first secretary, went to Bole International Airport, and communicated with the Egyptian citizens present at the airport,'' as well as the Ethiopian immigration authorities, to find out the reality of the situation, and to be reassured that there are no violations have committed to the Egyptians."

The embassy stated that the Egyptian citizens detained at the Ethiopian airport, went to Addis Ababa to stay for 14 days in Ethiopia, then to head to the State of Kuwait, not for tourism, according to the visas they obtained from Cairo.

It has been announced that a number of these citizens violated the quarantine instructions followed in Ethiopia in light of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Egyptian embassy affirmed that it is currently working to ensure the rights of citizens detained at the airport and treating them appropriately.

The ministry also pointed out that this does not negate the right of the host country to take whatever measures it deems necessary in the event of violating the instructions of the country or the precautionary measures taken to confront the coronavirus pandemic.
