Egyptian, Spanish FMs Discuss Fostering Bilateral Ties, Regional Developments

On Saturday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received his Spanish counterpart González Laya at Cairo’s Al-Tahrir Palace, according to a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry.

During the meeting, Shoukry added that Egypt is coordinating with Spain to restore stability to the eastern Mediterranean region, which is being plagued by severe wave of increasing tensions.

The Egyptian top diplomat stressed that Cairo and Madrid also reaffirmed their willingness to strengthen cooperation and expand coordination in order to serve common interests and achieve stability.

Shoukry and Laya have also signed a memorandum of understanding for the establishment of a mechanism for political consultations between Spain and Egypt in order to deepen our bilateral relations.

On the Libyan issue, Shoukry said that instability in Libya is reflected in Egypt, adding that Cairo seeks to solve this crisis in the neighboring country only through dialogue.

He also reaffirmed his rejection of the policy of expansion and creating tension by some parties, in reference to Turkey, stressing that coordination is underway with the European partners in the eastern Mediterranean.

He added, "There are countries that transferred thousands of mercenaries and terrorists to Libya for expansionist reasons," stressing that the foreign military presence in Libya has reinforced instability.

On her part, the Spanish Minister praised her country's relations with Egypt, voicing her aspiration to foster mutual ties to a larger scale.

The two ministers discussed means to improve bilateral relations and coordinated on regional files of mutual concern.
