Tarek El-Houby, head of the National Food Safety Authority announced the resumption of Egyptian fish exports to the European Union countries after a three-year hiatus, following Egypt’s fulfillment of all the European Commission’s requirements related to the safety of fish products.
The head of the authority explained that this achievement was made after the authority received the file at the end of 2021, where a comprehensive control system was developed covering all stages of fish product trading, starting from the primary source, through factories, and reaching local markets.
He pointed out that intensive work and cooperation with the relevant authorities resulted in achieving integration in the control system by June 2023.
During the review visit conducted by the European Commission from May 28 to June 6, 2024, the Commission praised the Egyptian control system, and later issued an official letter stating the reopening of Egyptian fish exports to the European Union markets.
The head of the authority stressed that this development represents a strong push for the growth of Egyptian food industry exports, and enhances investment opportunities in the fish sector, especially for small and medium enterprises.
He also stressed the importance of this success in supporting food security, preserving marine resources, and achieving sustainability in fisheries and related markets.
