Egyptian Embassy in Canada Hosts Mama Maggie Lecture

Egyptian Embassy in Canada hosted a lecture of Magda Gibran, known as Mama Maggie, founder of president of the Stephen’s Children Charity in Egypt, according to a statement issued by the Egyptian ministry of foreign affairs on Thursday. 

In cooperation with Aga Khan Foundation, approximately 100 officials, elites and NGOs’ representatives attended the event which was held on Wednesday. 

A number of foreign ambassadors resident in Canada and senior priests of Coptic Orthodox churches un Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto attended the lecture as well. 

Egypt’s Ambassador to Canada, Ahmed Abu Zeid, gave a speech and welcomed Mama Maggie. He lauded her volunteer activities carried out by her charity. 

The Foundation embraces 1400 volunteers who serve more than 30,000 poor families. They supply them with food, cloth and money. 

Abu Zeid Lauded Efforts of Mama Maggie 

“Mama Maggie’s journey spreads spirit of hope and optimism,” Abu Zeid said. 

He noted that her efforts come in line with the Egyptian government’s endeavors towards providing essential services to the neediest areas across the country, along with setting up string social safety nets.

Mama Maggie was also professor of computer science at the American University in Cairo. She was nominated to the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize.

She is also known as “the Mother Teresa of Cairo”. 

In 1989, she gave up her academic career to become a Coptic Orthodox Christian consecrated servant and set up the charity Stephen's Children, whose aim is improving the lives of the children of Christians and families living in Cairo's slums.

In 2019, she was awarded the International Women of Courage Award by the Department of United States and the US First Lady Melania Trump.
