Egypt Turns to Europe to Import Wheat

Egypt has raised its efforts to manage its wheat needs, amid the continuing crisis of the Russian-Ukrainian war that affects the country's imports.

The General Authority for Supply Commodities in Egypt has issued a "limited tender to purchase an unspecified quantity of wheat from the European import sources approved by it."

The authority said, “The deadline for submitting offers is (today) April 13, and that offers can be submitted on the basis of delivery on board or inclusive of shipping costs, with payment upon sight.

Egypt is one of the largest importers of wheat in the world, and the largest importer of it from Russia and Ukraine.

In the wake of the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Egyptian Finance Minister, Mohamed Maait, acknowledged that his country will face consequences as a result of these events, noting that the costs of importing wheat in the state budget will rise by 15 billion Egyptian pounds (a dollar equals approximately 18.30 pounds.
