Egypt's Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Omar Marwan affirmed that the Egyptian state has always sought to support and promote freedom of the press and media, via issuing many laws related to the press professional and institutional organization as well as the media syndicate.

These laws guarantee the independence of journalists and media professionals and their rights to carry out work under safe conditions, according to Marwan.

Addressing the UN Human Rights Council's (UNHRC) universal periodic review session on Egypt, Marwan added that press laws provide journalists with the freedom to express their views except for crimes like incitement to violence, discrimination and defamation.

He added that Egypt's protest law has been amended to emphasize the right to demonstrate peacefully after an advance notice, granting the judiciary the sole authority to prevent, or postpone the demonstration.

It is worthy mentioning that, Marwan left Cairo on Sunday to attend the UN Human Rights Council's (UNHRC) Universal Periodic Review session on Egypt in Geneva.

Prior to the UNHRC session, Egypt’s parliamentary Affairs minister held a series of meetings with a number of ministers and civil society institutions to review the country's efforts in the human rights field.

In recent years, Egypt has repeatedly denounced accusations of human rights abuses by international human rights organizations, rejecting foreign interference in Egypt's domestic affairs.
