President Abdel Fattah El Sisi said Monday that Egypt has taken a firm stand to protect its Nile water rights that is based on negotiations to iron out any differences with the Ethiopian government.

Speaking about the controversial Ethiopian dam project and Egyptians’ fears that it could harm their nation’s and Sudan’s share in the Nile waters, Sisi stressed during a meeting he had with journalists on the sidelines of the 2019 World Youth Forum (WYF), that Egypt’s internal stability helps it to conduct its negotiations with Ethiopia over this matter in a calm atmosphere.

"When we (and Sudan) needed to develop the negotiation process with Ethiopia, we sought the help of a fourth party (the US and the World Bank)," the president added.

"We hope to reach a positive result in this regard by January 15th," Sisi noted.

In response to a question about some hostile statements against Egypt that were once attributed to the Ethiopian prime minister, Sisi indicated that he prefers to adopt a positive attitude.

"We do not want to spend our resources in wars, rather we want to concentrate on our own development and reconstruction,” the president stressed.

The WYF is currently taking place in the Egyptian Red Sea resort city of Sharm El Sheik.

The WYF2019 is attended by around 7,000 youths representing different countries.

According to the forum’s schedule, participants would attend 24 sessions and 14 workshops to mainly discuss the prospects for sustainable development in Africa, challenges facing creative work in the age of technology, in addition to the energy sector in the Mediterranean countries.
