On Wednesday, Egypt voiced its deep condolences to the Moroccan government over the victims of the flooding of an underground textile workshop in Tangier, which resulted in more than two dozen fatalities, according to the Egyptian foreign ministry's spokesman Ahmed Hafez.

In a statement, Hafez affirmed Egypt's solidarity with the Moroccan friendly government and people in this painful disaster, wishing a speedy recovery to all the injured.

Notably, the Moroccan prime minister has promised “sanctions” after heavy rains flooded illegal textile factories in the basement, killing 28 people, and revived discussions on working conditions in North African countries.

Tangier officials said that 28 bodies, primarily women, were withdrawn from a factory in a residential area in a northern port city.

“The victims were trapped without an escape route,” said Abdellahim Kabazi, a senior fire and rescue team employee, on a 2M television station in Morocco.

The channel reported that 28 people had died.

The Northern Human Rights Observatory and the Moroccan Human Rights Association also confirmed the victims.

The investigation of the accident has started.
