Egypt Fights Drugs, Treats Addicts

The issue of drug addiction is one of the serious problems that threaten the security and future of countries. Therefore, the Egyptian government has prepared an intensive plan to fight addiction and treat addicts. The government is in preparation to pass new drug law.

The Ministry of Social Solidarity plays a major role in solving this problem. Many seminars and meetings are being organized to educate employees and employers about the dangers of addiction, in addition to responding to citizens' inquiries.

The Anti-Addiction and Abuse Fund launched a new initiative entitled "for your sake" aimed at educating citizens in the governorates of Upper Egypt and the Mediterranean.

The Minister of Solidarity, Ghada Wali, said that the initiative targets all the different governorates. It will continue to be effective after Eid al-Fitr. Furthermore, any person who asks for addiction treatment is voluntarily considered as a patient, and is treated free of charge in strict confidence, through the hotline for the treatment of patients with addiction.

Assistant Minister of Social Solidarity Amr Othman said that the hotline (16023) for the fund has been announced in governmental departments. He added that many employees of the state administration have been provided for treatment through the hotline.

The ministry granted a check of 160,000 pounds to support recovering addicts in their small projects, as well as returning to work and production once again. This will enable them to find a source of livelihood that would help them to spend their lives, such as a supermarket project worth 80,000 pounds. Also, motorcycle accessories, worth 80 thousand pounds  to provide post-treatment services and social integration of addicts as useful inpiduals in the community.
