Egypt have topped their 2021 African Cup of Nations qualifying group with a convincing 3-1 win against Togo in Lome. The Pharaohs entered the game holding second place with five points from three matches, following their 1-0 victory over Togo in Cairo.

Following the victory, Egypt sit top of Group G with eight points, ahead of second-placed Comoros on goal difference. Meanwhile Kenya sit third with three points, while Togo is languishing at the bottom of the group with only one point.

Egypt Team Line-Up

The unavailability of Amr El-Sulya, Mohamed Hany, and Mohamed Elneny forced Hossam El-Badry to make seven changes to the team that started in Cario.

Ayman Ashraf and Ahmed Tawfik replaced Ahmed Fethouh and Mohamed Hany at full-backs, and the whole midfield was changed as Hamdi Fathi, Tarek Hamed, Mohamed Magdy Afsha started in place of Amr El-Sulya, Mohamed Elneny, and Abdallah El-Said.

Lastly, Mohamed Sherif was handed his debut starting at right-wing, with Kouka leading the front line instead of Mostafa Mohamed.

Match Report

Togo entered the game looking for an early goal, and they had a couple of half-chances through Kodjo Fo-Doh Laba and Peniel Mlapa.

However, it was the Pharaohs who opened the scoring through Mohamed Afsha in the 18th minute.

It was all Egypt after that and El-Badry’s side managed to add their second of the game 15 minutes later, but this time it was through Mohamed Sherif.

The 24-year-old winger was put through on goal following a long kick from Mohamed El-Shennawy, before finishing into the net between Togo’s keeper legs.

Seven minutes into the second-half, Mahmoud Trezeguet scored Egypt’s third of the game after he latched onto Ayman Ashraf’s long pass, before finishing easily into the net with a one-time finish.

El-Badry’s first substitutes of the game saw Mostafa Mohamed and Ahmed Sayed Zizo replace Kouka and Mohamed Sherif in the 56th minute.

Then in the 69th minute, Abdallah El-Said and Ramadan Sobhi came on for Trezeguet and Afsha, before Ayman Ashraf was forced to leave the pitch due to an injury, and was replaced by Ahmed Fetouh.

Togo tried to score a consolation goal in the second-half, and they managed to do so through Elom Nya-Vedji in the 93rd minute, to end the game 3-1.
