Egypt briefs Security Council on situation in Great Lakes region

Ambassador Mohamed Idris, Egypt's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York briefed the Security Council on the situation in the Great Lakes.

This comes within the framework of the Egyptian presidency of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission, and activating the advisory role of the commission at the Security Council.

In a statement today, Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Ambassador Idris reviewed, in his briefing, the role of the Peacebuilding Commission in the Great Lakes and its close coordination with governments and its work in accordance with the national vision and ownership of the countries of the region in various fields such as strengthening cross-border cooperation, including security cooperation, facing the consequences of the Coronavirus pandemic and Ebola, empowering women and enhancing their role in mediating for peace in the region, and mobilizing financing support through international funding bodies.

He also pointed out to the commission’s vision on the Great Lakes region under the Egyptian presidency , as it will, in coordination with the countries of the region, the International Conference on the Great Lakes and the African Union, make efforts during the coming period to support the new United Nations regional strategy for the region and the relevant Security Council resolutions.

The ministry stated that Egypt has extended historical relations with the Great Lakes countries, it plays an active role in the regional mechanisms of the region through its adopted membership in the International Conference of the Great Lakes region and its founding role in the African Union.
