Dutch airline KLM announced, on Saturday, suspending its flights to Ukraine until further notice as Russia is preparing to invade the eastern European country.

"The next flight to the capital Kyiv is scheduled for tonight, but will not be operated," the Netherlands' main airline said in a statement.

The decision followed "changes to travel advice... and a comprehensive security analysis," it added. "There will be no flights in Ukrainian airspace until further notice."

The Netherlands joined several European nations including Belgium, Germany and Italy in calling for its citizens to leave Ukraine and advising against travel to the country.

In the same vein, the United States is set to evacuate its embassy in Kyiv as Western intelligence officials warn that a Russian invasion of Ukraine is happening on February 16.

Russia could launch an attack on Ukraine as early as next Wednesday, February 16, according to the respected German publication, Der Spiegel.

Accordingly, U.S. officials revealed that the State Department plans to announce early Saturday that all American staff at the Kyiv embassy shall be required to leave ahead of a feared Russian invasion.

The department had already urged families of U.S. embassy staffers in Kyiv to leave. On the other hand, Russia affirmed that its embassy open in Kyiv will remain open, according to Sky News.
