The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, in cooperation with the Ministry of Housing has completed the project of restoring the Sultan Qansuh Abu Said Dome in the eastern Mamluk Cemetery.

Hisham Samir, Assistant Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for Archaeological Projects and Museums confirmed that the structural and architectural renewal works of the dome have been completed, including strengthening the walls and foundations, cleaning and restoring the four facades of the dome, the transition area, and the copper crescent of the dome.

The work was completed by installing windows inlaid with colored glass, giving the dome a distinctive look that illuminates its interior space and reflects its original character with colors that made its architectural elements shine.

A new indoor and outdoor lighting system was installed, and the mihrab and chandeliers were also renovated. Signs and panels, as well as surveillance cameras were installed in the site to help visitors during their tour, and ensure their safety.

Samir explained that the area around the dome has been paved, and surrounded by a landscape that matches the nature of the monuments. Signage and panels describing the site and the dome, as well as surveillance cameras, have been installed.

Osama Talaat, head of the Islamic, Coptic and Jewish Antiquities Sector stated that the dome was built in 904 AH or 1498 AD by the Circassian Mamluk Sultan Qansuh Abu Said as a burial tomb.

The dome became known recently as the dome of al-Ghafeer because it was used as a residence for the area guards.
